Emergence of new drugs has dramatically improved the prognosis of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) over the past twenty years. 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)/leucovorin plus oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) or irinotecan (IFL or FOLFIRI) are the most effective first-line chemotherapy regimens. Increased understanding of the biology of the disease have led to the development of targeted therapies such as bevacizumab (Avastin®). Bevacizumab is the only anti-angiogenic agent shown to improve survival outcomes in mCRC and has become the standard of care for first-line treatment with combination chemotherapy.
The learning objectives of the program include: • Understanding the principles and rationale of anti-angioenic therapy in cancer • Review pre-clinical studies evaluating the efficacy of anti-angiogenic therapy in cancer • Discuss the current data and clinical applications with chemotherapy in mCRC and other tumours • Discuss the safety profile of bevacizumab and other anti-angiogenic agents • Application of learnings through case study discussion.
