| The Canadian Oncology Societies
was founded in 1976 when several oncologists joined together with
a common interest, through the efforts of Dr. Carl Reise, a surgical
oncologist from Winnipeg. In 1974, Dr. Reise took the initiative to
the Canadian Cancer Society. This initiative was then supported by
Dr. Anthony Miller and after two meetings in 1975 (Royal College,
January 1975 and NCIC, March 1975), an agreement was reached to form
the Canadian Oncology Societies. The first annual meeting of the Canadian
Oncology Societies was held on January 26, 1977 in Toronto with 66
founding members in attendance. Dr. Reise was the founding president
and Dr. Anthony Miller of Toronto, the first Secretary/Treasurer.
Over its 20 year history,
the mandate of the Canadian Oncology Societies has evolved, particularly
in view of the development of several new oncological specialties
associations such as the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists
and the Canadian Society of Surgical Oncologists to name a few.
With the various discipline-related
mandates of the oncological subspecialties, the Canadian Oncology
Societies has become a federation of oncological societies with
a common voice in Oncology. The membership of the Canadian Oncology
Societies includes the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists
(CAMO), the
Canadian Hematology Society (CHS), the Canadian Society of Surgical
Oncology (CSSO),
the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of Canada (GOC),
the Canadian Association of Nursing in Oncology (CANO)
and the Canadian Uro-Oncology Group (CUOG).
In a retreat of the board of directors held in July 1994, the goals
and objectives of the society were reviewed and the following issues
were agreed upon and subsequently implemented by the membership.
