Membership and Bylaws

Conditions and Classes of Membership:

Active Members
Any individual who is a medical practitioner and holds a valid certificate in a surgical specialty or subspecialty and who is engaged in the field of cancer or related field.

Senior Members
Surgeons who have reached the age of 65 and who have or are practicing in the field of surgical oncology or a related field.

Members of the CSSO who have retired from the active practice and wish to continue to participate in the activities of the society.

Senior members shall have all the rights and privileges of the Society and shall be excused from the necessity to pay dues.

Honorary Members
Any individual who is deemed worthy by dint of contribution to the field of oncology or by services to the CSSO and is proposed by the members of the executive of the Society for membership may be nominated and if elected by the membership, shall be entitled to all the privileges of the Society but shall not pay dues and may not hold office.

Associate Members
Physicians, scientists, or others engaged in the investigation, treatment or experimental field of surgical oncology and are entitled to all the privileges and offices of the Society except for the positions of president and president-elect.

Membership

Admission to Membership:
Any individual meeting the qualifications as described above may apply for membership. The application must be considered by the executive or a committee delegated for such a purpose and if approved shall be proposed for acceptance at the annual meeting, and elected to membership by vote of those attending the meeting. Successful applicants will then become members on the payment of the appropriate dues as set forward from time-to-time by the Society.

Termination of Membership:
Any member may withdraw by informing the executive in person or in writing, or by death.

Members in default of dues after two years shall be considered to have withdrawn.

Members terminated for non payment of dues may be reinstated by the payment of two years of dues regardless of the length of time between termination and re-application.

Dues:
Dues shall be set from time-to-time by the executive subject to approval by the members at the annual meeting.

Composition of the Society:
The Society shall consist of an executive, standing committees and a general membership.

The executive shall consist of:
a president

a president-elect

the immediate past president

a secretary-treasurer

chairmen of standing committees

two members at large

The president shall be nominated from among the membership and serve for two years.
The president-elect shall be nominated from the membership and serve for two years; his term of office to coincide with that of president.

The past president shall serve for a period of two years.

The secretary-treasurer shall be elected from the membership and serve for a period of five years.

Members at large shall be elected from the general membership and their terms shall last for two years and overlap.

The executive shall constitute the annual program committee to be chaired by the president-elect.

Bylaws

Membership Committee
Shall consist of a chairman who shall serve for two years and a membership of two members whose terms shall overlap and last for two years.

Education Committee
Shall consist of a chairman elected from and by the membership who shall serve for five years. Membership shall consist of directors of surgical oncology training programs from Canadian centres.

Research Committee
Shall consist of a chairman elected from and by the members and committee members with all terms lasting five years with overlapping terms for the members at large.

Nominating Committee
Shall consist of the immediate past president as chairman and two members nominated from the floor of the Society.

Finance Committee
Two members elected annually at the annual meeting to audit the financial affairs of the Society.

Duties of the Executive:
to hold at least one annual meeting open to all the members and such other meeting as deemed necessary from time-to-time.

to appoint ad hoc committees as required to fill the mandate of the Society.

to conduct the financial affairs of the Society and to set annual dues as needed to maintain soluency.

to review encourage and exam proposals for the establishment of surgical oncology training programs in Canadian Medical Schools.

Annual Meeting:
A notice of meeting must be given at least two months in advance to all members.

A quorum shall consist of a minimum of 12 members of the executive and membership.

A quorum shall be required for the passing of resolutions which affect the structure or goals of the Society.

Motion(s) to change the bylaws of the Society shall require a 2 month notice of motion sent to all members.
